Alexa, Play The Song "This is How We Do It"

With artificial intelligence (AI) on the rise, there's different approaches and methods that are being applied. Chapter 2 of Todd Kelsey's book, "Surfing the Tsunami" looks into the ideas of Autos and Autonomy associated with AI. In other words, he looks at the four A's that can be used to simplify our perspective on the complexity of AI.

Kelsey helps us better understand AI by think of the four A's: Autos, Advice, Automation, and Analysis.

The first A, autos, refers to the complexity currently found within automobiles, such as self-driving cars, as a clear, physical example of what AI is capable of (Kelsey, 2018, p.34).

The second A, advice, gathers a variety of  data and breaks it down into simpler terms based on our needs and wants. By looking at the patterns of data, which can be as simple as what we prefer when writing papers, to what music we like to listen to, this form of technology has been tailored to guide us towards the direction we want (Kelsey, 2018, p. 35). In part of doing this, Kelsey emphasizes is the importance of machine learning for proper advice. Every time an individual is online-shopping, or asking Alexa to play a certain song, that data is gathered and further used in the process of machine learning to get an insight on a person's tastes. A's a result, similar clothing websites and music choices will be a command away.

The third A, automation, can be described as a form of an algorithm that is gathered based on a routine that can be duplicated (Kelsey, 2018, p. 36). With digital tasks, it's fairly doable to automate them. This is a method that is frequently used by businesses. In Kelsey's words, "the more routine they are, the easier it is to automate the virtual process" (p. 36). Professional emails responses are automated based on the conversations we hold. In Microsoft Outlook, for example, as soon as someone clicks the reply button, one could expect an automated message similar to "thanks for your reply" to appear. Moreover, Kelsey goes on to talk about the ways society and the working force can benefit from this automated method, helping individuals by increasing productivity (p.36).

The fourth A, analysis, is considered the most complex form of AI. It works to gather data, analyze it, then use it when there's a need for decision-making, or problem solving. In order to do this, analysis also uses machine learning to look at large amounts of data, look at patterns and trends, and make conscious decisions. In other words, this method of AI uses machine learning to perform decision-making/problem-solving in an accurate, efficient manner.

The four A's Kelsey thoroughly describes in chapter 2 clearly express the ways artificial intelligence has simplified the daily lives in all aspects. Next time you get bored from your song playlist, always remember that Alexa is there with a list of new recommendations.
