Artificial Intelligence: What's Your Perspective?
With so many changes being brought upon society, people from different age groups, different professional fields, and different parts of the world have multiple views on the effects of artificial intelligence (AI). Nonetheless, everyone has a different perspective on how artificial intelligence should be dealt with. In the book "Surfing the Tsunami", Todd Kelsey mentions the three perspectives people have when it comes to their views on AI. They're either an optimist, a pessimist, or a realist.
Optimist
Within this perspective, an individual will generally have a positive outlook throughout every situation. When they focus on the good, people tend to be hopeful of the potential and influence AI holds. A moderate amount of optimism is healthy. When people remain highly optimistic, however, they sometimes step out of reality and become blindsided. Nonetheless, if someone has an optimistic view on AI, Kelsey recommends one to ask themselves the following:
(1) With so much work already being digital, do you think the impact of AI may be larger and more rapid than the impact from past technologies? If so, do you think the number of jobs AI creates (short-term and long-term) could be less than the jobs AI replaces?
(2) Should everyone take action to adapt and learn more about AI, and ideally become adept in AI? (Kelsey, 2018)
Pessimist
As a pessimist, an individual will "act on the real possibility that things could get very ugly" (Kelsey, 2018). When someone expects the worst outcome in all situations, they find every possible reason to avoid AI. As Kelsey emphasizes in chapter 3 of his book, people should avoid being a pessimist. Along with increasing the chances of less social support and other indirect effects, such as anxiety of the uncertainty, an inappropriate response to the influence of AI can result in a higher chance of its negative points to rise. Nonetheless, if someone has a pessimist view on AI, Kelsey recommends one to ask themselves the following:
(1)Do you think it's possible that AI and automation could create more jobs than they could replace?
(2)If you think there could be a massive job loss and increasing economic inequality, what kind of response should individuals, companies, or governments support in order to create new jobs?
(Kelsey, 2018)
Realist
Ideally, this the perspective you want to hold. This type of individual "acts on the data, both good and bad" (Kelsey, 2018). As a realist, your perspective is just that: real. Not only do you want see the good or the bad of a situation, you want to see the reality of it. By holding onto one's values as a realist, a person is more likely to adopt to the changes that are brought by AI and encourage others to gather information and data on this subject. Ideally, realists are the people who remain successful in the case of uncertainty or a dramatic change like AI. Nonetheless, if someone has a realist view on AI, Kelsey recommends one to ask themselves the following:
(1) Do you think the impact of AI may be larger and more rapid than the impact from past technologies?
(2) Should everyone take some form of action, such as adapting and learning more about AI, ideally becoming adept in AI?
(3) If you're convinced to take action and report its seriousness, do you think it should be private (confined to your personal life), or public (advocate for your country/country)?
(Kelsey, 2018)
